      Depends on whether there's someone that can be sued right away for violating the patent (said only half-jokingly). There really is no single answer for this. At my past jobs, if a dev develops some code that the company later patents, the dev got a few thousand dollars as a bonus. This was the policy of the companies, not something that can be applied all across the industry.

At my past jobs, if a dev develops some code that the company later patents, the dev got a few thousand dollars as a bonus.
