Hmmm...If the average person weighs 120 pounds, then overall people would weigh about 720 billion pounds (~= 342,000,000,000 kg) According to Google, the mass of the earth is 5,974,200,000,000,000,000,000,000 kg. That means the mass of the earth is roughly 17,500,000,000,000 times the mass of all combined humans.

Which means that if everyone stood on the same spot and jumped 17.5cm into the air the Earth would shift 1/100 of a nanometer, the force of everyone landing a fraction of a second later would generate an equal shift in the oposite direction.

I don't think this is about weight, but the attractive force that the sun applies on earth. So I would gess it is A LOT bigger then that =) Lets put it this way: if a commet came and hit the earth, what would its size and speed be in order to change the earth's course? Now lets say that all humans on earth can reach that kind of mass (and I doubt it).. What about speed? hint_54

I think removing a person from the surface of the earth, has more effect than had that human jumped up and down a million times. There's a lot of loose and fluid stuff between earth's center of gravity and its crust. :)

Jumping exerts a downward push sufficient to overcome gravity and jump x cm into the air. gravity then accellerates you body until it re-impacts the earth imparting (again) a downward force as the kinetic energy is dissipated. Granted, at the apex of your jump, your gravity acts on earth with the same force as it does you, but the mass difference make accellaration of the earth inconsequential. Even so, this sounds like bunk to me.

I think all the volunteers should climb to the top of the highest building in their vecinity and jump off (timing the leap so that all will strike the round together). That way we eliminate the most negative component to the human gene pool at once...
