If I had a software company, I wouldnt want a programmer to run it. I want someone with sound business knowledge and good technical communication skills. To recap: "Watching programmers trying to run software companies is like watching someone who thinks he can surf, trying to surf in small waves."**

I love Joel's. A programmer with technical as well as communicative skills is rare.

I worked for a couple of guys who started a software company having no knowledge whatsoever of anything to do with software. They employed me to be their technical advice, and lead programmer, but wouldnt listen to a word I said. At the time I left, they were 2 years into building their "flagship" product, and that was nearly a year ago and they are still not to market AFAIK. I tend to disagree. A person who is a business genius with no technical(software) knowledge will fail to run a software organization IMO. You need a blend of both.

I was about to tell leppie to get a drug test then I read your comments. I couldn't agree more even though I couldn't have come up with the same comment.:rose:

So the question to be asked is how did you get that software company? Did your MBA have the experience, intuition and insight to design and develop the product insisting that the dangerous things be handled correctly? No an MBA is just an MBA. You've never had the experience to work for a non-technical manager. I have, it was horrid, rancid, rotting fish would have been preferable. The foundations of a solid software company will be poured, troweled and retained by software developers. HP always flourished when E.E.'s were in the key positions. But you don't need *just* a software developer you need one with vision, desire and innovation. That's the line of demarkation as those attributes occur rarely in technical people compared to MBA and marketing types.

As someone who has always lived far, far from any ocean, I find surfing analogies confusing and belittling. How about this:

"Watching programmers trying to run software companies is like watching an English major trying to write a novel."
