I have XP and have it where if I have more than one instance of an app open, it groups them in the taskbar. If you click on the taskbar item it will expand showing you the different instances that you have open. If you right-click on one it will give you the option to close it, with Alt-F4 being the hot-key to close it. However if you DO try to use Alt-F4 it attempts to ‘close’ the OS!! That's because the Windows Explorer shell has focus, causing the Alt-F4 to be directed to your desktop. Annoying. :) /ravi My new year's resolution: 2048 x 1536 Home | Music | Articles | Freeware | Trips ravib(at)ravib(dot)com

Not quite.Alt-F4 closes the curent foreground app window. Since in your case no app window was in foreground, Alt-F4 is sent to the desktop window wich attempts to shutdown windows. I have used that in cases when an crt display was going wild, to "gently" shutdown windows(Alt-F4,Enter repeatedly).

Right click the taskbar in an empty area and choose Properties. In the Taskbar Appearance section there's a checkbox "Group similar taskbar buttons". Try unchecking it and clicking OK. Mike Poz

no, i even changed the registry setting to group as soon as it's 2. I just think it's weird that it has Alt-F4 next to 'Close' on the context menu - clicking 'Close' closes it, Alt-F4 does something totally different. I understand 'why' it's doing it, I just know it shoudln't be. My Music | My Pics | My Articles BlackDice
