BLACK FAMINE IN UKRAINE 1932-33[^] Man some events in history just fall through the cracks. I am not Ukrainian but this seems like a huge deal - Stalin starved to death 7 million people. It seems like something out of Orwell's books but I guess it happened.

If you add together all his other atrocities it comes to a much larger figure.

Yep. Stalin wasn't exactly an Eagle Scout.

I am Russian Jew by descent and Stalin killed the last of my Russian relatives from the Ukraine that had not already left. There are many low points in history that Americans are never taught. Just ask the Albanians.

Consider it where Orwell got his inspiration... I'll be honest - it's quite difficult for someone of my generation, born and raised after both the Communist sympathizers and "Red-scare" witch hunters had largely passed on, to comprehend the sort of public attitude it took to play down things like this. Kinda makes you wonder what our grandkids are gonna think about the events of today's world...

Hopefully people will mature and get their shit together and then our grandkids can look at now from their viewpoint and see how jacked up things are at this time.

What the fuck are you talking about? People have been screaming for years about how bad the goddamned USSR was. Hell, one of my main arguments is that there is no fundamental differnece between Fascism and Communism based on this very kind of evidence. Why the hell do you claim its been "played down"? And frankly, with evidence like this, didn't the "Red-scare" witch hunters have a point? "You have no concept of the depth and complexity of my beliefs." Jim A. Johnson

Two reasons: one, i didn't really learn of it for many years. I heard plenty of other things about the USSR, about the restrictions of ownership, commerce, religion, travel. I suppose i must've read about Stalin's five-year plans, and the resulting deaths in a textbook or encyclopedia... but it never seemed to get a whole lot of emphasis. #2: public attitude. Yelling "fascist!" is an insult; yelling "communist" is a joke. Heck, Godwin's Law refers to Hitler, not Stalin - because comparing someone to Stalin just isn't very effective.

Did they? I thought we called them "witch hunters" in reference to the famous Salem witch trials - that is, fanatical prosecutors of people who, for the most part at least, weren't witches.
