Looking for a PDF utility

I'm looking for something to create PDF's with. I don't really need something full-blown like Distiller (right now, at least), just to be able to compose simple documents in Office and then save them as a PDF. Thing is, while I'm at it, I guess I may as well get something that can convert PDF's to Word, plus all the other kind of things you need to do with PDF's that I don't yet realize you need to do. Free is good but I don't mind spending a bit of money if it's worth it. This[^] is a free online converter that seems to work well and they have a PDF printer driver that also seems to work well but I thought I'd ask to see if people had any recommendations.

I'll second CutePDF, it also adds the capability that you can create PDFs from any document. Wonderful utility until I got the full-blown Distiller.

I will second Anna's suggestion of PDFCreator. I use it regularly and it has never failed me! Though I sometimes don't have a lot of success with images -- high quality images sometimes get blurred.

high quality images that are small on the page or full page? Default DPI on my copy is 600dpi which seems reasonable for mine. You can also override the default compression if the image is being compressed too much, you can use the highest quality jpeg you prefer on all PDF documents. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. I still like PDFcreator best, in some ways over distiller, in some ways not. For over 9/10 of my documents PDFcreator is fast and easy and all I need. For a few more I need to tweak the settings, which are much easier to tweak in the latest version! But only a few cases a year do I ever need more. I've been following PDFcreator for almost two years, maybe longer, back when it was a manual install part by part. The latest version has brought all that together into a nice package with tunable parameters for your document and image quality. You may not know it is there, because it wasn't previously, but it has everything I have needed so far. I haven't tried the server mode yet, I have used it in that mode in previous versions, but since installed the software everywhere I could as stand-alone. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. I was able to even turn off compression, if you really, really want high quality images to stay untouched, turn off compression and resampling and huge file, but perfect image. CutePDF is also what I use and it does the job while not breaking the bank. Keep in mind that it is really just using Ghostscript (open source) and a shell around Adobe Reader. But it works pretty slick except for bookmarks (after 2 years they still suck) but otherwise it is a good product and alot cheaper than Adobe. D.

Not for what I have tried to do. If someday I try to make a PDF of a big high-resolution image, then thay might be a failure. :)

High quality images small on the page (screenshots are an example where I don't care about it looking less than perfect.) I'll try changing some of the configuration parameters to see if I get better results (or at least know about them :)). Thanks!

I use OpenOffice to open the word document, and export it as a PDF. Works beautifully.

I use OpenOffice to open the word document, and export it as a PDF. Works beautifully.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I was camping for a couple of days. If you open an PDF file from CutePDF it creates a toolbar and then it embeds Adobe Reader inside the window (under the toobar). Not it may be possible to use other PDF readers (Foxit, etc.) I dont know. Here is a clip fromt he help file" ------------ CutePDF has the following installation requirements Works with Acrobat Reader 5.0, 5.1, Adobe Reader* 6.0, 7.0, or any other PDF viewer. Does not require the full version of Adobe Acrobat to run. Microsoft Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, 2003. Internet Explorer Browser 5.0 (IE 5.0) or higher. Total system memory of at least 32MB RAM. A minimum of 5MB hard disk space. SVGA monitor. Suggested monitor settings: True Color, 800x600 or higher. * You can access http://www.adobe.com to download Adobe Reader from Adobe Systems Incorporated. -------------- Hope that clears it up.
