Are You Ready?

For bird flu. I'm not talking medically, in that sense even the government isn't. But a simple quarantine, if the flu strikes your region, your town, your neighborhood. We shop in bulk, so it's less of a problem. We have enough food, bottled water, toilet paper, cleaning supplies (soap, shampoo, laundry detergent) to last at least 2 weeks. As well as internet, (includes online banking), and the fact that most of our work can be done from home. The thing we don't have is health insurance or extra money in case of a medical emergency. How prepared are you? Roswell X| (suffering from mild flu-like symptoms - most likely a simple cold)

I seriously doubt that anyone is prepared for a serious outbreak of the bird flu or any other form of influenza outbreak that has a high mortality rate.

In the current state of the world, we are more likely to have a nuclear holocaust than a simple bird flu. -------- "I say no to drugs, but they don't listen." - Marilyn Manson

Do you remember in the 1970's there was the Swine Flu scare? Then there was SARS. It's all just media hype.

In Britain, earlier in the year, the media was preparing us with their usual scaremongering after a swan was found to have died from bird flu. They were figuratively rubbing their hands together in glee, as they trotted out experts to tell us how many thousands of people were going to die. Then the whole thing went quiet and everyone has forgotten about it. Meanwhile in America the pharamceutical company Roche, who manufactured the flu vaccine Tamiflu, wich they purported to be able to defend against bird flu (this claim is disputed), has made millions of dollars on the back of the scare. Words fade as the meanings change, but somehow, it don't bother me.

And then there was the spanish flu. Which is currently believed to be an avian strain. If this strain can mutate to cross the species barrior without loosing it's lethality we could be in serious trouble. Hopefully it won't be able to, but if it can supportive medical care (all we can do) won't do much good when people goto bed healthy, get sick, and die overnight without ever waking up.
