SEO Opinions

I have been reading a bit lately on search engine optimization and while the real detail of Online marketing is probably not something you all deal with i guess most of you (who deal with web stuff) will have some opinions on the subject. I am going to set up a small online marketing experiment to test this but to what extent do you think a well designed site (Using CSS to seperate formatting from content, Good use of Keywords, using 'title' and 'strong' tags etc.) increases search engine rankings and therefore increases your hit count? Is that for the links back to the site? I know page ranking is calculated on the number, relevence and page ranking of the linking site but there seems to be some question as to how this effects the position on the search (a page with a ranking of 4 may place above one with a ranking of 5). Obviously in some very competetive industries the chances of getting many links from other relevent sites (that are not also competitors who wouldnt link anyway) must be pretty slim. So i was just wondering if it would be possible to get a page 1 on google or Yahoo using just a well formatted site. Jon
