Just a small question, are Peter Norton's tools still around. I remember them coming in handy when I was starting out with computers (God bless speed disk). I see Norton System Works around and it contains the Utilties but are they same as those back in the 1990's? On a further note, are the Norton Utilities still the best choice anymore? If they have been superceeded, may I ask what by then?

Never a big fan of Norton or his utilities. Other than Ghost they always seemed flakey at best. Just my 2 cents...

Execpt for Norton Antivirus, all products from Symantec (that I know of) seem to not be in any real development anymore. I still wonder why they bought Partition magic only to kill it by not fixing the bugs in it or drive size limitations. They have done this with so many products it just makes me mad.

Ghost wasn't his. He did a Microsoft and purchased it off a competitor.

Yes, I have heard it to be quite the life saver. I really must use it as some stage and backup my machine. Does save the drive images directly to optical media? I tried it before (a very old version) and it would fail to write even the first CD.

OK, with that in mind what is the better of each utility? The utilites of interest to me are: * Speed-disk (Windows Defragmenter is so slooooooooooooow!) * Personal Firewall (I think Zonealarm is better) * AntiVirus (I'm being encouraged to use a different one) From what I can gather, Ghost is still a good utility, correct me if I'm wrong.

PowerQuest wasn't it? We've still got v4 of PQDI (PowerQuest Drive Image) and it works fantastically, bit flaky with newer filesystems but fantastic all the same. Never do trust Norton stuff. :suss:

Found Avast to be really good, just ran it on a mates computer and it picked up 12 malaware / viruses that AVG hadn't, his laptop has been less buggy since.

I have had several versions of this program with the several copies of systemworks, to me it seems that they have fired all the developers on this one in 2002. However I can not recommend the competition (DiskKeeper) because every time I download a trial version and run it on my disks it does not actually reduce fragmentation by more than a few %. So my disk went from 67% of the files being fragmented to 65% and it took an hour to do that and the program said it was finished. To me it is finished when the disk has less than 5% fragmentation... I have emailed tech support on this one several times on several versions of diskkeeper but they seem to have no fix. If I get some time later I will try to comment on the rest.

Yes and no. The original Ghost was called Ghost and made by some company I have long forgotten. Drive Image was bought recently and some of the functionality integrated to Ghost and Drive Image itself killed (I believe) to limit competition.

As of how to accomplish this I wouldn't have a clue at the moment and I'm too lazy to google it
