How's the scam going?
-
Well, I've just experienced a scam attempt and I thought I'll share the experience. As you probably know from my previous posts, I'm looking for buying a used car. Since I don't want a car that's been driven in Romania, I started looking on www.mobile.de, which is the most popular site for selling used cars in Europe. I found some deals that were to good to be true, but being on a tight budget I though I'll give it a try and contacted the seller, for more details on the cars: if it was in good condition, if it had been damaged, if he was the only owner, etc. I got a reply from one of them (it was about this VW Golf 1.9 TDI[^] priced at EUR 3400 - a bargain yeah I know) letting me know that the car was in great condition and that he is selling it because he mainly used it in Germany as he had some shops there, but now he's closed them so he's back to UK and a left side steering weel car is quite difficult to drive there. He told me that if I'm still interested to let him know and he will send me the terms. He also mentioned dropping the price to EUR 3000. I basically was ok with this, just asked him if the car was currently in the UK, because I'll talk to a friend of mine from there to take a look at the car, possibly take an MOT test, etc. If all would be ok, we could go forward with the deal. In the meantime I told him to send me terms (VIN number so I could check the cars history, etc). I got the following reply ... The last price is EUR 3000 including shipping and insurance. I agree to leave you few days for testing. The car will be shipped to your place via Transports ( www.road-movers.com ).In about 3 days you will have the car. The payment will be made on delivery after inspection, Let me explain you the procedure. The car is already in www.road-movers.com custody. I do not have time to manage this sale and this is the reason I left the car there. They are waiting my instructions so if you decide to buy it I will send them your shipping address and they will proceed with the delivery. From the moment you have decided to buy the car www.road-movers.com will put informations about it on the website. You'll be able to read those informations because they will give you a tracking number. After that you'll have to pay the car value to www.road-movers.com. Right after the transfer is done they will proc

Glad to hear you were unscathed ( although I can't imagine any intelligent person going for a - let me just drop the price without asking and b - please use my escrow service ). Funniest story I ever heard about this sort of thing was a guy selling a Mac notebook, a guy asked to buy it using an escrow service he recommended. The seller was on a a photography list ( what else are MAcs good for ? ) and got someone in the country ( UK from memory ) to take pictures, and basically sent them a pretend Mac made out of cardboard. It was funny reading.

:) A guy I worked with years ago bought a laptop on ebay. The seller sent it from Adelaide I think and the guy I worked with contacted the courier and was told that a package was on its way, got the dimentions and the weight of the package and sent the money via western union. When the package arived he had paid about $2500 for the a phone book. Luckily he was able to cancel the transaction with western union and the police were called who actually took the package away for finger printing.
