I couldn't believe one person on there said programmers shouldn't be given fast computers because it lets them write slow code. Programmers will write slow code if the peer review or even their own tests don't include performance as a criteria. It doesn't matter if they have fast or slow computers. But a fast computer gets in more compiles! that is why a fast computer is good.

I have had two monitors since February, and it's absolutely the greatest thing ever!! Now when I use single-monitor computers, it's annoying (like my laptop for more than browsing and email.)

I always leave slow code in my first release. Then in my next release I remove some of it and my users think they got a major upgrade. Isn't that how everyone does it?:-D

Ditto. It's a pain to have to go back to my desktop machine which has only 1 big CRT, whereas my work has afforded me 2 very large LCDs.

so I should send this to my boss.... I should tell him I will donate my two 24" monitors to the two programmers with only one monitor.... if he buys me two 30" monitors to replace them.

I agree. The combination of privacy, easy access to the PC ( I've got quite a bit of work done this Sunday, as my workspace is always ready to go, and calling my name ), and access to things like music and food as I want them makes home the best work environment I've ever had. The Iron Maiden posters on the wall help, I am sure....

We test our software in almost 20 virtual machines, in 4 different real machines. Some of these are intentionally slow. But our development machines rock! :)

Performance tweaking requires lot of experimenting and measuring - something you are less inclined to do if you spent all your time waiting on that compile.

Well, 5 out of 6 isn't half bad :) Number 6 is the only one lacking in our company due to sudden outburst when code, customers or anything else annoys (we have one open office). We tried to get 3 monitors, but our boss won't go for it yet though. 2 simply isn't enough anymore :D
