Before the introduction of "video" search category, Google displayed "Web", "Images", "News", "Groups", and "Froogle". After "Video" search was added, "Group" demoted to the 'other' category. One had to click "More" link and then select "Groups" from the flyout menu. Now "Groups" is back. And, "Book" searching functionality is also added. (I remember, getting extra-credit assignments for searching phrases in a book as school assignments. The goal of such homeworks was to encourage students to read through the book. I wonder if Google will now encourage the shortcuts!) - Malhar

They never went away. You just had/have to click on "more".
