Watch out for the Garmins some models have moved to a proprietary protocol and if you want to write an app with one it will require more effort. Make sure the receiver is NMEA compliant that way you can practically drop in a code module and start manipulating the GPS data.

I used to work for these guys[^] their product is pretty good but Im not sure if it fits in your price range Most of the big players have good software, the big difference is in the map data. How up to date is it? How much details is there (eg does it know about one way streets, no right hand / left hand turns etc etc) and how often updates are made and how much they charge for the updates
