I am having a tough time working with dual monitors for 8 hrs a day at the office. While the two monitor idea saves me a lot of time and work I am having trouble positioning them correctly to avoid shoulder/neck aches. And these are CRT's not those flat panels you lucky guys are currently staring at :) I've tried positioning both such that the seperation is inline with my view and since that did not work I just went ahead and put my best monitor in front of me and the other one next to it. This is good untill I forget and start off working on the second monitor ... and there's that neck pain again.

You might find it more comfortable if you put your primary slightly higher than the other (since your neck will move down slightly as you look to the side)

Well in this case it is not a factor of CRT vs. Flat panel, other than you can move flat-panel monitors closer together, that rarely saves you more than an inch or three. I don't know what the official position is, but I run with keyboard just off center to the left, mouse to the right, basically centered between the two. After that, they are tilted inward a few degrees, not sure how much, but basically so that I just swivel the chair slightly rather than moving my neck. My monitors are not high enough, so I do have a difficult tilt downward and that is a strain after 10 hours or so, but I make sure and take breaks and stretch often. Although these[^] are for LCDs, the idea is the placement, near with a slight tilt inward, rotate your chair, not your neck. Don't give up breaks, stretch and move your neck around (not 360 please) during breaks so you don't get a stiff neck.

I'm a lefty which does affect my layout somewhat but what i've done is to center my body on the qwerty section of the keyboard (with arms strait this corresponds to hands on arrows and mice) and then align myself 60:40 (65:35?) in favor of my primary monitor. I then keep whatever I'm working on on it, with email/references/etc (all stuff I only look at for short times) on the second. THe other thing I've noticed is that I need to sit about 6" farther back than I did with a single monitor setup to keep everything within eye move only distances.

I've found the problem isn't as bad when you use 3 monitors. ;P

MY docking station only has 2 connectors, and I can't access the VGA port on the laptop while docked. In any case AFAIK the gfx chip only supports 2 displays at time.

http://www.matrox.com/mga/offhome/th2go/home.cfm[^] TripleHead2Go adapts one output to three monitors. Which means with one VGA out, you have three screens. Two VGA out, you could have six screens.

Getting an additional monitor isn't a major problem. I'd just repeat the borrow monitor from infrequently used testbox and put in a service ticket on it routine that got a 3rd in my cube. Covincing someone to buy a $400 adaptor on thier overhead budget is something else entirely. :-/

Lucky! I keep looking for people retiring or leaving the company so I can "find" a second monitor. They usually move the old equipment pretty quick.
