Coding down under - is the demand that high?

Among some of the most prominent Aussie CPians, Chris M is in Canada, CG works for a Canadian company (and contracts for a Texas company), and Michael Martin works at a pub. I am not so sure Australia is hot ground for tech people :-)

Outsourcing - is this the beginning of the end for this practice ? Should outsourcing be considered a "bug" in Upper Management thinking, if so, should it be addressed in the new CP forum.

I looked into it several years back and found the pay to be low and the cost of living high. So for me is was not an option.

That term can be misleading. For example I get 4 weeks vacation per year. In AU I might get 6 weeks. During my 4 weeks US vacation time, I can do almost anything due to a high level of disposable income. In AU I would have to spend my 6 weeks vacation on sitting on the porch. I would rather have 4 weeks of action than 6 weeks of slivers in my arse. :-D

Wow Mike - you make it sound like we're all living on $1 a day and continually resoldering our old pots and pans to survive. I'm not sure what job you were doing down there, or what sort of activities the pay from that job failed to cover, but your descriptions are very alien to mine and my friends.

Sorry I guess I misrepresented my information. Using the Web, I looked at developer jobs in AU and their salary ranges. Then I looked up Real Estate prices in AU. Did some simple math using my current salary and Real Estate prices in my location. That's all. The difference in disposable income was significant.

In Sydney you can easily spend a third of your salary on rent (for an average place). Obviously it depends where you want to live though, and how big a place. So what kind of percentage would this be in the biggest US cities?

Not sure as I have never lived in one but I would guess more than a third. I know most developers with families from the Silicon Valley live outside the area and commute due to the housing costs. However I live in a small to medium size city. I own a medium sized house in a rural neighborhood and my mortgage is about 12% of my net income.

There is plenty of work, pay is good and the life style is awsome. We are having trouble finding enough skilled people to work here. Anyone want a job? :)
