Musical Question - Slide Guitar CD
-
Am wanting to get a CD of good slide guitar music for a Christmas present for a friend. I know nothing about slide guitar music apart from a section in Road To Hell by Chris Rea. Is there a definitive exponent of this type of music please? Thank "twanggggggggg" you "twanggggggggg"
I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)

Slide guitar is not a single style of music. Derek Trucks is a great slide player. So is Ry Cooder. So is Warren Haynes ( Govt Mule ). Going back, Duane Allman was an awesome slide player (think Layla). What sort of music are you looking for ? If you want blues, Dave Hole is another great choice.

The late Duane Allman played a key role in bringing slide guitar into rock music, through his work with the Allman Brothers Band and with Derek and the Dominos' Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs album. Beginning in the 1960s, Allman used an empty glass Coricidin medicine bottle, which he wore over his ring finger, as a slide; this was later picked up by other slide guitarists such as Bonnie Raitt, Rory Gallagher, and Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Such bottles eventually went out of production in the early 1980s (although replicas have been produced since 1985).[1][2] Grammy award winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Bonnie Raitt also showcased the slide guitar, as well as studio and solo artist Ry Cooder and the late George Harrison (particularly in his later albums). Jack White of the White Stripes uses slide guitar for the solos on the album Elephant, and can be seen doing so in the video for "Seven Nation Army". John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers also used slide on the track "Scar Tissue". Derek Trucks, nephew of Allman Brothers drummer Butch Trucks, is a dedicated artist and accomplished practitioner of the technique. Joe Walsh also uses slide guitar in his classic "Rocky Mountain Way". Jeff Beck established himself as a master of slide with such memorable tracks as "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" (a Charles Mingus tune) and "Cause We've Ended As Lovers". Noted master slide specialists include Louisianan Sonny Landreth, Australian Dave Hole, and Eric Sardinas, who plays slide on an electric resonator guitar. Country masters include Jerry Douglas and Junior Brown.

check out Junior Brown[^]. he plays this double-necked monster guitar: half 6-string, half lap steel, switching between them seamlessly. he's a corny country player, most of the time, but he also does a lot of Hendrix's blues songs, and a bunch of surf songs, in his shows. last time i saw him, he was playing with Buddy Miles, the drummer from Jimi Hendrix's Band Of Gypsies.

I could listen to him all day. His pickin' and slidin' are beyond comparison. :)

Also, the late Lowell George of Little Feat! He liked to use a Craftsman 5/8" socket wrench head "because you can find them almost anywhere." (Quoted from a bit on their album Hoy! Hoy!)

I'm stunned to see a reference to Government Mule. I thought it was a secret that only I knew! :) Next I'll be seeing references to Os Mutantes and Dengue Fever.
LOL - I used to feel that way, too. I listened to Dose for months, and at one stage I had a box of bootleg CDs taped from shows. I still have a couple of double CDs that I made up culling blues cover songs from bootleg tapes. I've not followed them more recently, but Blind man in the dark would have to be one of my all time favourite songs.
