I just wanted to know, if Microsoft is going to stop letting you download Express edition form their website. And if yes, when?

I don't think so. The original plan was to have them free for a year, but then I seem to remember them changing their mind about charging for the Express range. I can't find the link right now but if you do a google for it you'll probably find the page.

Actually I am more interested in SQL Server Express. I read some stuff from Microsoft site. They seem to be taking this one a little more seriously than the rest of the express editions. Look what they have to say about its price: "SQL Server 2005 Express Edition has always been and will continue to be a free download." And by the way, SQL Server Express is going to replace MSDE (Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine). And MSDE is not going to work on Vista. All this makes SQL server Express look like, it is going to be around for a while. And may be it is Microsoft's competition to MySQL!

Actually I can't see them charging for it at all given what the competition is doing and I'm not talking mySQL or the rest of F/OSS. Both Oracle and IBM have express editions of their databases available for free and my tools here talk to them quite nicely. It'd be idiotic, IMNSHO, for them to try to charge now. Then again, we are talking about MS.

Actually, looking back on it, almost everything I've done over the last thirty-two years has had databases involved in one respect or another. What is surprising is how well featured the 'low-end' express versions are. True, there are limitations but so long as you have them firmly fixed in mind, you can do an awful lot with them on today's machines. Far more than Access was capable of and even MSDE for that matter. There are a couple of places where I would still use MSDE over SQL Server 2005 Express but that has to do with those subtle features (subscriptions) that I was talking about. As for the express versions of the .NET languages, no guesses there about what they intend to do although with Mono, Eclipse, and other projects hanging out there, again I'd be surprised if they do charge something or if they did, it would amount to very much. At one time I saw a figure like $49 but again, it'd be silly on their part if they intend to recapture the old VB6 crowd again. I do know that it'll be a cold day ... before I shell out what they want for VS 2005 Team Suite and I was one of the testers. It's okay, but way out of my budget. I'll stick to the express editions which are working just fine for my (limited) needs here.

By the way, when it comes to Databases, I have this feeling that most of the commercial databases are just a waste of money. Because we have MySQL. And I heard that NASA uses it! Yahoo uses it and almost every open source project that will need a database somewhere uses MySQL. I can’t even figure out how Oracle makes the money it does. You perhaps are the right guy I should ask why it is so....... Could you please answer?

It really depends on the your needs. Oracle, db2, and lately MS SQL Server 2005 to some extent, operate and the extreme high-end in terms of reliability, load balancing, and transactions per minute (TPM). mySQL also lacks some of the features that these three have built-in that high-end database engineers take for granted especially in the self-monitoring and self-optimization departments. Your typical F/OSS application is not dealing with hundreds of thosands to millions of transactions per minute although done right, on the right hardware, with the right F/OSS database, you can get close for the right set of circumstances. That's why you have to be conversant with more than one of the beasts, preferably across the entire spectrum from SQLite on up to the big guns so you know which hammer to bring to the construction site ;-). Other issues can also become involved such as the on-site application server, legacy issues, etc. Lastly, licensing issues also play a significant part. While the prices quoted for the larger databases would give you or I severe sticker shock, don't always believe that figure. It's amazing how often discounts magically appear if a company feels a contract or an existing client slipping away either to a competitor or to open source. those are all constraints that can limit your choice. For most purposes, SQLite, MySQL and the like are quite suitable. Even in the mid-tier you have postgreSQL and BDB which are quite scalable as well and frankly both impress me a lot here as they add features (Oracle compatability for postgreSQL and XML support for BDB). I could do side-by-sides but nothing I could type here would even begin to cover in detail why you would choose one over another and so far as I've seen, going into every problem to date, I've never used the same database twice in a row and that's going back decades. More than a few I've created out of whole cloth on my own in various languages. [I remember taking a C language course once just to make sure that I hadn't missed anything teaching myself the language for K&R and the final project was to create a database package. Everyone else turned in a relatively simple flat-file database application. Mine was a full-up relational, tutorial driven, database server. Then again, I had most of the code, in other languages, just laying around. I could just as easily done it in Perl or even Basic although that wouldn't have been half as pretty or anywhere near as fast (or fun!).] Clear as mud, right?

I just wanted to know, if Microsoft is going to stop letting you download Express edition form their website. And if yes, when?

I would certainly doubt it, I imagine the next Visual Studio will have Express editions as well. The Express versions are target at beginners and hobbyists and from what I have heard the Express team is really excited about this stuff. On a side topic if you ever get a chance to see a presentation by Dan Fernandez (Lead Product Manager on the Visual Studio Express team) I would seriously recommend it.
