CP suggestions

I've been visiting code project for over a year and I must say it's the best developer forum out there. However, there are a couple of things that I think can be done to improve it. 1. Seeing all responses on a single page. I hate the fact that for each response I have to click each and every message. This gets really annoying for long threads. If there was a way to get all messages in a single click (message thread view) that would be great. I'm sure Chrs has probably heard this before. 2. The forums for specific tech questions at times seems to be dragging. In other words no response to questions. How about when a person ask a question in the forums it is automatically sent to the MS newsgroup. That way more people will see the question. It could also be an advertising method such that all questions could contain a link to CP. Responses are gathered from the MS newsgroup and published in the CP forums. I typically don't ask questions in the CP forum because of the lack of response, however I will submit questions to the MS newsgroup since the likelyhood of getting answers is greater. Just a thought. 3. How about a beta forum? I have an application that I'm currently working on which I would love for fellow CPians to review to get comments and suggestions. The reason I'm somewhat reluctant is that it will be a commercial program for sale so exposing it to the CP group could invite competition (which I don't really need at the moment) With that said, that value in terms of making the product better through CP comments would be tremendous. Not sure how to do this, just a thought. 4. Lastly, I would like to see a forum that talks about business issues related to being in software development. You see these types of questions in the lounge but I'm not sure that is the place for them. Lots of people on CP are thinking about thinks such as making money via shareware, dealing with office politics, etc. While I like the lounge, there seems to be a mix of casual questions vs. specific business or software related questions ( Am I making sense here). Finally, please don't take this as a critisim of CP, I'm just looking for ways to help impove what already is a great site.

1. Do you use DHTML view ? Then all the responses are loaded, it's just a case of clicking as you read. 2. What forums do you frequent ? I read the C++ one every morning to answer any questions I can, and I don't see many that go unanswered. 3. There is a forum for testing, or somesuch, but to get people to know about a beta you're releasing, I'd suggest using the lounge. 4. I reckon that would be a very dead forum. It's not discussed that often IMO. But some of the others are as dead (XML/XSL for instance), so that's probably not a reason NOT to have one. I think posting questions from CP to the MS newsgroups is a lousy idea though. I think the response time on our forums is pretty obvious just by looking at them. The core ones are very good, the peripheral ones are, well, peripheral. Christian The tragedy of cyberspace - that so much can travel so far, and yet mean so little. Hi christian, Regarding #1 1. Yeah, I use the thread view, so I will have to take a look at the Dhtml view to see what it has to offer. My only problem is in some of these long threads (15 messages of so) you have to click through each message. I'd rather see all the messages and scroll up and down using the mouse. 2. Unfortunately I stopped visiting the cp forums. I'm going to make an effort to revisit them over the next couple of weeks since I'm at CP so frequently. I just found it better at MS newsgroups because the response rate seems to be much, much quicker( Maybe its a perception thing, I don't know). 4. Yeah you're right, I know this is a development community but I think the business issues as it relates to sw development is just as important. It's overlooked to often. This might not be the best site for it but I thought I would mention it.

I believe it is one area that is missing on the whole web, the only place I do know of is a shareware newsgroup, But it is often more a flame-war than a help. :-) For now I suggest using the General Forum for this. As you said about the response times, I think 20% of the Forums get 90% of the hits, which is a common occurrence anywhere, I guess. Chris probably has exact figures about this. But I wouldn't consider asking an ASP question (for example ) here first, as I wouldn't expect the response to be great. Regardz Colin J Davies

I know what you mean - when I first started the C++ forum was pretty quiet, which is when I started trying to answer as many as I could. My morning login is really just a habit since then, I usually only answer one or two now, the rest have been done.
