Freeware bandwidth
-
I've got a friend that is thinking about discontinuing a freeware app he's run for years because of the bandwidth cost. I am not quite sure but this is somewhere from 10 to 30 thousand downloads a month for a ~10 MB file. I suggested CNET, Tucows, etc but he won't redirect users. I only know of one site that allows direct linking (FreewareFocus) but they are fickle. So, does anyone know of any sites that host freeware files?

How about getting him a gmail account, he'll get 100MB web space then which he can use, very handy for dumping stuff up on the web. Only thing is I don't know what the bandwidth limits are like. Another free thing which I came across which seemed to look quite good was http://www.esnips.com. Although havn't looked at it in depth.

I think he should move to a new provider/plan with no bandwidth limit. Anyway, I think Softpedia[^] allows direct linking.

pages.google.com ? They have a 100MB file size limit, and I have not heard of any bandwidth restrictions.

Probably not, unless he wants to give out the source too.

bandwidth restrictions
I did see something in the groups about 6 months ago when it "took off" about peoples sites being restricted because of volume but I think that was more to do with the fact that they'd only just started the project so had to limit things while they sorted out issues.

DreamHost[^] offers two terabytes of bandwidth a month along with 200 gigs of storage space at $8/mo. And if you use the MAX97[^] discount code, you receive $97 off of your first years plan making your first years cost only $22 for the whole year. Believe me, I'm in no way affiliated with DreamHost. It's just that there's no way anyone these days should be paying ridiculous amounts of money on bandwidth; there's just too much competition out there to be paying out of the nose.

I friend of mine raves about DreamHost. She told me that uptime is at a minimum but service is good. I remember a promo code she told me, 777 I think. She only had to pay for the domain.
