Dead printer

Well, my 8 year old HP DeskJet 695C finally gave up the ghost:rose:. It has been many years since it was able to print colour, and now it does not print at all. It has been very faithful to me, printing out it's single page of text everyday for the past eight years, but alas, it is now time to get a new one. So, does anybody have any recommendations for a simple black and white ink jet printer? I do not want one of them new fangled photo printers, they just cost a fortune in ink. My brother has one of them. He only prints black and white text also, but has to buy new colour ink every once in a while when the unused colour cartridge dries up. fricken waste:sigh:

Do you limit yourself to one page a day to save trees, and have a backlog of printing ? Or do you print one form, the same form, every day ? Because, if it's the latter, and you've needed them for nearly 3000 days now, surely it's an option to just get the things printed for you ?

Yeah, I probably will end up going that route, thanks for the suggestion. But I thought I would ask here first in case anybody knows of some ink jets that fit my requirements. I will have to head down to the office supply store and see what they got. Any specific model you care to recommend?

The one page is all I need. It is simply a summary of the previous days events, Barn min and max temperatures, feed and water consumption, current feed inventory, average bird weights, growth for the day, deviation from target. All that fun stuff. I get it printed out early in the morning so when I get up I can just grab the paper and look it over while I do the early morning routine.

The Brother HLxxxx series are awesome. I spent $75 for it (new) 3 years ago (1200 dpi, 17ppm) and it's worked reliably day in and day out. Great little printer. Today, I might spring a smidge more for a duplex one. /ravi

Thanks. Just looked at Staples.ca and they have an HL2040 for $110 with a $30 rebate. I think I will go pick that one up tomorrow.

You could get a used tablet pc for around $400. drop the data sheet onto that and carry it around instead of paper, save a tree, and pay for it in a year or two in ink savings.

Saves ink and trees, costs power, harder to scribble notes in the corner, more expensive when I take into the barn and accidently drop it into the manure, and harder to pass onto others who may want a copy. And I still need a new printer. Thanks for the thought, but in my case not practical. Paper is just way more handy for me.

I giant NOOOOOOOO from me on any Brother laser printers. Unless things have changed recently, they have seperate drum units that degrade after the first or second toner cartridge. Brother estimates their life at around 12000 pages - I say it's more like 4000. I went the Brother HLXXXX route and sold the damn thing on EBay after all my pages started printing with a grey background (being the honest guy that I am, I got 35 bucks for it because it needed a new drum unit). A search on the web showed that a LOT of other people were in the same boat. The drum unit costs nearly as much as the printer. Funny because all the big review sites listed the Brother printers as their editor's picks a few years ago. Of course they never ran them past a few dozen pages. I ended up with a cheap HP laserJet (1200). Costco sells a similar one (I think up here in Kamloops it's the 1300). They're cheap, work great, have lots of recycled toner cartridge availability and don't require drum unit changes. My 1200 now has over 40000 pages on it and the prints still look great. Hope that helps.

We bought a colour laser and as the flying spagetti monster is my witness we will never buy an inkjet again. I recommend highly that you get a laser printer. The total cost of ownership is a bare fraction of even the cheapest or most expensive inkjet printer. Inkjet printers are sold primarily on the basis of making money off the cartridges and their technology is cheap and nasty. A good quality laser printer is not much more these days and they are tough as tanks and if you print only a page a day you'll probably not need to change the toner more than once a year if that.

Yeah a giant Nooo from myself as well, I used to be a network tech and I can't count the number of broken Brother laser printers I saw but I have yet to see a truly broken HP laserjet. HP are one of the few good name brands for anything left these days.

Hello, I don't think you will find monochrome inkjet printers anymore :confused:. My recommendation is to buy an Epson printer like the Stylus C88. Cheap to buy, but a very good printer: prints fast, has four ink cartridges (three separated color cartridges), excellent print quality, and comes with a printer driver that enables double sided printing. You can event print photos with very high quality if you wish. Don't mind printing in color, for example Internet pages. And you can always ask for draft quality which uses less ink. You should be pleased with this one :).

I second that. A client of mine "dumped" her HP 1300 Laser on me with 3 boxes of toner because HP was discontinuing the printer. Works like a charm for me. When it dies, I'm definately picking up an inexpensive laser printer :-D

I agree with most of the others who have responded. Brother makes a great inexpensive printer. We have an HL 1435 and for the year and a half it comes up about once a month with an error that the drum needs replacing (this after at least a dozen cartridge changes). Bypass the error and it works like a clock for another month or so before the error reappears.

My problem wasn't that there was an error - there wasn't. It was that all my prints started coming out with a grey background. If you do a search on the 'net you'll see that a LOT of people have had the same problem. Brother's response was that the drum needed changed and, since it's a consumeable, it wasn't covered by warranty. Cheers, Drew.
