Do you mean that you're going to use it for development? And not as a server? :wtf:

I second that, if that's what they get for development work, I want one of the old ones, it'd beat the crap out of my existing boxes.

.. just heard that approval for our new project development machines has gone through... 2x Quad Core Xeon 8Gb Ram 500Gb RAID-0 10k RPM HD NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 Should keep us going for a little bit ! :-)

Nice! Don't forget to test your apps on 'real world' machines too. ;)

It is funny you would mention that.... There was a point in time when a much faster, newer processor would cause our software to have trouble. Now, it is the opposite. We release new product developed and tested on the 'latest new thing' and it does not work on some older, slower systems the customer's actually use day-to-day. So, don't forget to break out and dust off that old 33 MHz 80486 system with 64 MB RAM once in awhile ;)

It's a departure on our normal development machines... My new project needs high-quality 3D graphics... Our normal budget for a development machine is £1000 every 4 years -- I got a Core 2 Duo laptop a couple of months ago to replace my Compaq n610c laptop. However, I tend to get "extra" machines when projects require something special -- we're going to deliver this project in about two years -- so to get representative development, that's the sort of spec we need! I did once get stuck on a project running NT4 that overran a few *years* and am lucky not to still be on it... the developers on that project got upgraded to 2GHz P4's a few months ago as company policy forces a 4 year refresh -- their Pentium 400MHz machines were a pain (compiling C++ which took hours/days) whilst we're going to be using these new machines with C#...

Sigh... I've been playing with my brand new Falcon NorthWest FragBox that has literally just arrived for not even an hour and already I feel inadequate. Thanks a bundle :-(

No need, the project is a "complete" solution for the customer and therefore, we'll supply the machines too! We spend extra on the development machines now, hoping (hedging our bets) that in a couple of years the power of normal machines will fit into the cost-budget. Ideally this will be the slowest machine things are likely to run on!

Ok, to make you feel better.... they're work machines (so no games can be installed according to our IT dept) and the Quadro isn't the hotest thing for DirectX -- although it should scream in the required OpenGL! The most we might be able to swing is Microsoft Flight Simulator as a representative comparison to the product we're developing! -- modified at 12:27 Thursday 14th December, 2006 -- grammar fix

Right now, actually it doesn't. I got it with the new 8800GTS video card but I haven't got around to buying a monitor yet so I've got it plugged into a Dell 17" CRT monitor I borrowed off a friend, running at 1280x768. I got the FragBox with the transparent panels in the side of the chassis and I can actually see the video card laughing at me with contempt X|

Cool! I'm just starting to get used to my new dev laptop (an Acer 8215WLMi - 2GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD and a gorgeous 1680 x 1050 widescreen display). So far, it's coped with just about everything I've thrown at it with ease. :)
