    Here's an extract from a blog post[^] by Joel[^]:

_I installed Adblock because flashing ads give me headaches. It turns out this is not an accident. Human eyes and brain has evolved together so that your attention is drawn to things that move. Everything about vision is designed to force you to look at things in the periphery, like lions and snakes and stuff, that might be a threat. Of course, that's why the ads are blinking. When you're trying to read a page with flashing crap in the corners, you can literally get a headache trying to drag your eyes back to the content that's not flashing. You're trying to defeat millions of years of evolution and it's painful. I'm sorry, but if websites and advertisers have so little respect for me that they are willing to subject me to headaches just to sell a few more dancing hamsters, well, to hell with 'em.
    _

Do you guys think that the blinking ads should be moved some place inconspicuous on CP? Especially on forums? Visual Assist X certainly aren't endearing themselves with me by giving me a head ache trying to stay focussed on the main content!

Depends on the ad, Sometimes i actually like them. Things that have a nice interface and smooth transitions add to the page i think. That being said I am about ready to paint over my monitor wherever that Visual Assist X thing is.

Ads? I rarely see them since I started using AdBlock. I believe that there is something wrong with the advertising industry: ads are utterly misplaced. It may seem odd, but I love ads. When I'm out for shopping, I can choose whatever I feel is better by reading and paying attention to ads. I actively searched for ads recently when I was looking for a new office building for my company. And I found very hard to find them. Again, I believe that ads are misplaced: maybe, if I searched at swimming pools, I'd find office building ads. OTOH, whenever I'm looking CP for an improved Dataset serialization helper, I simply cannot understand why I should pay attention to some refactor tool or some graphics library. Oh, I'd love to see an ad for an improved Dataset serialization helper, if it exists. Those ads are there because I am part of a target audience, but what marketing people don't get is that I don't need their product right now, so I don't care. Exaggerating things a bit, it's the same problem with SPAM. That's why I use adblock or any other thing that will block ads for me.

That's interesting, because I'm finding that Vista gives me headaches and nausea. The animation sequences, even though they are very quick, of the windows opening and closing somehow make my stomach do wierd things. And the "copying" dialog is totally obnoxious. The progress bar has this whoosh animation, the caption bar does this wierd lighting animation, and there's something else too, I think. All together, it's so distracting I have to minimize the dialog. Which is ironic. I'd like to keep track of the progress of a copy or a download, but they've made the UI so annoying that I have to minimize it. Which makes all that animation pointless anyways! Marc

Hmm. Interesting. While I haven't got Vista yet I had the same sort of experience when I played around with XGL[^] some time back. The wobbly windows and the cool 3D rotation while switching workspaces were really slick in the beginning but with regular use it starting being a distraction; till it got to the point where I switched back to plain GNOME. I think they went a little overboard with XGL; even stuff like menus and tooltips were wobbly. Cute, slick and highly distracting!

There are blinking ads on CodeProject? I hadn't noticed. I guess I am either unevolved or have learnt to filter them out. I don't use any kind of ad-blocking filter, I find that ignoring things I'm not interested in is far, far quicker. I accept that some people are far easier to distract though. Marc's example is a classic one - I can have an entire screen full of copy dialogs working away and be working in another window without any distraction. Maybe it is because I used to wear glasses? They remove all peripherial vision and force you to focus your attention forward, through the lenses. Since switching to contact lenses years ago I regained my peripherial vision but I may have learnt to focus my attention better?

Disable themes, that helped me greatly speed up the UI and remove the annoying animations in progress bars.

Marc

The use of blinking ads reminds me of the early days when people realized they could use (the now depreciated) font tag and a lot of sites looked like ransom notes. Just because it is possible to do something doesn’t mean that you should do it!
