Blinking ads give me headaches

_Do you guys think that the blinking ads should be moved some place inconspicuous on CP? Especially on forums? Visual Assist X certainly aren't endearing themselves with me by giving me a head ache trying to stay focussed on the main content!

The animation sequences, even though they are very quick, of the windows opening and closing somehow make my stomach do wierd things. And the "copying" dialog is totally obnoxious. The progress bar has this whoosh animation, the caption bar does this wierd lighting animation, and there's something else too, I think. All together, it's so distracting I have to minimize the dialog. Which is ironic. I'd like to keep track of the progress of a copy or a download, but they've made the UI so annoying that I have to minimize it. Which makes all that animation pointless anyways! Marc

While I haven't got Vista yet I had the same sort of experience when I played around with XGL[^] some time back. The wobbly windows and the cool 3D rotation while switching workspaces were really slick in the beginning but with regular use it starting being a distraction; till it got to the point where I switched back to plain GNOME. I think they went a little overboard with XGL; even stuff like menus and tooltips were wobbly. Cute, slick and highly distracting!

Hmm. Interesting. While I haven't got Vista yet I had the same sort of experience when I played around with XGL[^] some time back. There are blinking ads on CodeProject? I hadn't noticed. I guess I am either unevolved or have learnt to filter them out. I don't use any kind of ad-blocking filter, I find that ignoring things I'm not interested in is far, far quicker. I accept that some people are far easier to distract though. Marc's example is a classic one - I can have an entire screen full of copy dialogs working away and be working in another window without any distraction. Maybe it is because I used to wear glasses? They remove all peripherial vision and force you to focus your attention forward, through the lenses. Since switching to contact lenses years ago I regained my peripherial vision but I may have learnt to focus my attention better?

Just because it is possible to do something doesn’t mean that you should do it!
