Crimson Editor[^] - loads fast, recognises UNIX file formats automatically, detects and highlights languages automatically and hasn't crashed on me yet. This padding means I have done the review as required. Elaine (pedantic fluffy tigress)

I will second Photonman007’s recommendation of Programmers Notepad, for the same reasons. Plus tabbed documents, fast and supports changing of line ending for either Windows or *Nix.
