Hi, folks! What are you using to archive your old VHS tapes? I've looked briefly at products from Hauppage and Pinnacle. I'm looking for something to plug my VCR into to convert all my family flicks to DVD. TIA!

I'm using one of Pinnacle's products for converting some 35mm slides to DVD. I don't have anything to compare it to, however.

Cool! That's another project I have in my queue! I have a ton of slides that are gathering dust in my garage. What, specifically, are you using for this? And how satisfied are you with the results?

I'm not an A/V person by any means, but what I've seen thus far has been very 'powerful.' I've no idea if it would create pro-level results or not. I'm just creating a DVD for family members.

I'm using one of Pinnacle's products. However, I've occasionally had problems with capturing the associated audio. I've looked at Hauppage as an alternative but I think I will probably go with one of the new ATI tuner cards.

An HP PhotoSmart scanner. I think it's an S20.

I ended up using an ATI All-In-Wonder, but it's not the best solution (and only works on my tired old PC.) If you don't want to edit anything, you could get a stand-alone DVD burner/player. (And be prepared to convert them yet again in 2020.) Added: There are companies that will do the conversion for you. If you don't want any editing, this may be the best way to go.

Panasonic has a couple of models that are combo VHS VCR + DVD Recorder. The units can take tapes and transfer them directly to DVDs. Steve

Doom9[^] has an excellent tutorial on TV capture using VirtualDub[^]. Also, be aware that some high-end video capture cards can't handle Macrovision[^] very well, resulting in a worthless recording. I use a $10 Hauppage card that I found on Ebay, and it works WAY better than my expensive (at the time) Radeon 9700 All-in-Wonder Pro for recording Macrovision protected VHS tapes.

Thanks for the tip. These are tapes I've made myself (family stuff, etc.) so I'm not worried about copy-protection.

What model is the card? I don't want to spend a great deal of money on this and $10 sounds like just the ticket!;)
