Minix

Does any one here have any experience with the operating system that is called Minix ? Is it good?

"The Soapbox has been so ..."It's an OS used in OS design courses. It's primary purpose was as a teaching aid, not as a general purpose OS for everyday use. However I have heard that it latest version adds a whole lot of newer features/bug fixes/redesigns that supposedly make it more suitable for everyday use.

Reminds me of the Linus Torvalds-Andrew Tannenbaum debate: http://groups.google.com/group/comp.os.minix/browse_thread/thread/c25870d7a41696d2/f447530d082cd95d?tvc=2[^] Notably the following ststement made by Tannenbaum to Linus: I still maintain the point that designing a monolithic kernel in 1991 is a fundamental error. Be thankful you are not my student. You would not get a high grade for such a design -- modified at 14:26 Sunday 28th January, 2007

That's priceless! And some of the speculation on the future is hillarious and others are very prophetic.
There is a part II: http://www.cs.vu.nl/~ast/reliable-os/[^] In the unlikely event that anyone missed it, a couple of years ago Microsoft paid a guy named Ken Brown to write a book saying Linus stole Linux from my MINIX 1 system. I refuted that accusation pretty strongly to clear Linus' good name. I may not entirely agree with the Linux design, but Linux is his baby, not my baby, and I was pretty unhappy when Brown said he plagiarized it from me
