Hi, folks! Quite often I'm opening explorer windows when suddenly I get a warning dialog named "Data Execution Protection" followed by a second one titled "Windows Explorer", saying it is sorry but it encountered a problem and needs to close. Acknowledging that closes any open Explorer windows. Dialog 1[^] Dialog 2[^] This is getting quite annoying! Is there anyone out there in CP Land who can identify the problem and how to fix it? Or, point me to a resource with which I can help myself. TIA!

My guess is that it has to do with a shell extension. Do you have any shell extensions installed?

no comment  As the other guy said, probably a shell extension that uses dynamic code generation. (e.g. an shell extension using ATL, which does WndProc thunking)

If I were you I would test for malicious code using an up-to-date virus scanner. Also have a look at what gets started at boot time. Check with Windows Update for any outstanding security updates. If you are satisfied that your machine is clean and you are still having this problem, you can alter the DEP settings via the Control Panel --> System --> Advanced tab --> Performance --> Settings --> Data Execution Prevention tab then make changes (as Administrator) as you require but be warned about security issues in making changes here.

I had the same problem on my old laptop. It occured whenver I clicked, or right-clicked, on certain AVI files in Windows Explorer. The files in question were from my Canon A75 digital camera. I'm guessing that some kind of extension or dodgy driver was present that was screwing this up. I fixed it by having 2 boot options, one with DEP enabled and one without. This article[^] tells you how to disable DEP by modifying boot.ini

I'm assuming there's a detailed description of the error in your event logs. Maybe that will help you track down the offending application.

I saw it on a professors laptop when he booted it up connected to the projector, other than that I have never seen it. Based on the performance of my Prof's laptop I would guess its Fubar.

Nothing that I can think of. Is there a tool I can use to find out?
