Valentine’s Day

OK, so it's commercialised to within an inch of its life, and yeah, there's all sorts of pressure surrounding it, and yes we should treat our loved ones as if every day were Valentine's Day blah blah blah. But what's wrong with having a little "today we can be shamelessly romantic" day? I love seeing flowers being delivered all over the city, and at the end of the day seeing the objects of affection carrying those flowers on the bus or train (and the little embarrassed smiles that are passed around by the passengers). I love hearing about people's plans for the evening, or seeing cards on desks, seeing restaurants full of couples spending an evening together where they aren't working or draining their brain in front of the TV. And I even love (for about an hour) seeing cutesy, cheesy little teddybears holding hearts or flowers or something else sacharine. I just like seeing people being nice to each other instead of having that permanent scowl or frown that I see in the city every day.

We started doing the same thing when we were in a long distance relationship and could only see each other on the weekends. It's nicer not having to deal with the crowds and parking.

I won't spend a lot but we will still celebrate the day. For those who are cynical about it; It is only a commercialised holiday if you subscribe to the commercial in it. Do your own thing, make it special without the credit card. If you insist on being a cynic keep your opinion to yourself, please, the rest of use don't appreciate being told off for having a good time.

Nothing, don't believe in this shite (Valentine's Day). Started here (Austria) some years ago as an evil plot of jewelers and florists. I showed my beloved ones my love by not stepping into the present lunacy.
All the label says is that this stuff contains chemicals "... known to the State of California to cause cancer in rats and low-income test subjects."

Two weeks from now, at the February 14, valentine’s day. The question here is what are you going to get for your beloved ones (girlfriends, wives, boyfriends, husbands, ….)? I don’t know yet what to get so I posted this question to get some ideas. Best regards.:rose:

Congested traffic, more rude drivers, ads on TV and in stores... The (*ahem*) hallmarks of an oversold holiday. Plenty of commercials, little that's holy. Of course, this is hardly surprising: as with so many saints in the Catholic tradition, Valentine's actual works and circumstances are vaguely defined at best; the most likely explanation for his continuing fame would seem to owe more to the commercial value of such reverence and celebration (while relics may not be the draw they once were, greeting cards more than take up the slack).

Curmudgeon... :P Like Chris I've only seen a good vibe on city streets during Valentines. The ads are easily ignored just like at Christmas.

Ok dear. I have good one habit of repeating when some one doesnt uderstand. I want to say you that, my "her" position is vacant. Means now I am trying to fill a position, which is called as my wife. Maybe that's something different in other countries (I suppose it is), but in Austria this Valentine's Day craze started maybe 5 years ago and I don't see any reason why I should buy my significant other EXACTLY on this day something like all the others.

I'll be the first to lament the commercialization of Christmas and other holidays. We don't decorate or go through any obscene amount of money on holidays. But, it's a dedicated time that we can set aside to celebrate family and friends. Today that can be easy to gloss over with how busy we all are. A holiday like Valentine's Day puts a stake in the ground. Now, if you can celebrate your relationship at different times of the year and buy random gifts for your significant other without the aid of a holiday than the more power to you. But, don't let your disdain for its commercialization rob you or your family from that dedicated time.
