Stolen Sat Navs
-
This article http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6325173.stm states:- Detective Sergeant John Agar from the force's vehicle crime team explains: "Thieves at the moment are using the latest technology, which can track a sat nav system even when it isn't on display in a vehicle. "So, for example, if your car is parked up and the sat nav is locked in the glove compartment, thieves can still tell it is there and will break into your car for it." Is this true or an urban myth? If it is true I will have hours of fun winding up my SatNav owning friends! This is from a thread in uk.rec.gps but I though the experts here would give the definitive answer :)
"Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it." - Ellen Goodman

Hi, I would bet its a myth. Navigation systems (and any GPS receiver) are not sending any data. They are just receiving the GPS signal which is always there. Some might have some GPRS/UTMS connection to receive further traffic information but I think those are rather rare. Robert

I reckon this is true, I know that you can pick up a laptop even it is turned off. Te batteries give off some signal. It would be cool if the GPS is stolen to have it beam up it's co-ordinates to the police.

I read a story about that happening ( GPS giving off a signal, and a bunch being stolen and retrieved for that reason ) just the other day. I assumed from the header that was the story being posted about.

The main opinion in the news group link I gave was that it is probably the thief looking at the driver and the car. e.g. a rep will drive, in the UK, a Mondeo, and will wear a suit, so there is a very good chance there will be a laptop in the boot and a SatNav in the glove box. Which to me sounded plausible.

I once had a laptop battery in my car and no laptop (had just bought a new battery). I left it in a bad part of town a few hours later the battery was gone. Funnily enough I had a GPS sitting on the dash, which was not taken.

That's just stupid. Thats the equivilent of saying "The guy driving the porsche might have a flat panel TV in his house".

The other Christmas the local police caught a thief that had broken into 6 cars in a busy car park, he was watching people come back to their cars with some shopping, watched them place it into the boot, and then go away to do some more shopping. This was in a busy car park in the build up to Christmas. BTW he was released on bail the following day. I would say the probability that a certain type of rep will have a laptop in their car is very high. I am sure that in Australia you can say that certain cars late a night, in certain areas, full of kids are probably stolen, as we can in the UK.

It's a myth. The only possibility would be to detect resonances in the aerial but the frequency at which satnav works this is impractical, especially inside a glove compartment. Elaine :rose:

I hope it is a myth, else I'm screwed both ways. My sat nav is built into the car -- it can't be removed.

If it can't be removed it is not likely that anyone will steal it! :-D That is unless they steal the whole car. :~

I have a very early Apple II. Shortly after I got it, my house was burglarized. They stole the little portable TV I was using as a monitor and left the computer it was sitting on which cost at least 10 times as much. Good thing they weren't geeks. ;)
