I've been using TextPad for a long time but I realize now that it requires WAY to much customization to function like VS. So what's a good text editor that has the following features: 1. MDI w/document tabs 2. syntax coloring with defaults for most popular languages (c++, cs, perl, html, etc.) 3. customizable colors (i like a black background) 4. VS2005 keyboard layout R.I.P textpad X|

You're one of those aren't you? We've got a guy in my group who runs Visual Studio to do compiles, but does his editing with some god-forsaken vi clone. Blech.

In VS the solution explorer and output/find/breakpoints windows take up a large portion of my work area. I don't need or want that when editing something simple like a pyhton/perl/batch/logfile etc. Can VS's syntax hilighting be customized for other languages like perl without installing the activestate stuff?

I don't know. It wouldn't surprise me to find there's an add-on that does it, though.
