You know that whole Views->Details/List/LargeIcons/etc? Exactly how many times do I have to set it to Details to actually get it to Vista's internals that I want D E T A I L S view. Not Large icons whereI have pictures. Not some weird mixed mode in the My Computer (or, just Computer, now) folder... I keep selecting Details, then apply to all folders in the Tools/View Dialog box, yet, it randomly changes the columns, the way it looks. I want to kill someone. Or something. I noticed this back in one of the betas, but thought it was a bug so didnt give it much attention, but now....:mad::mad: anyone?

I believe I once read (on Raymond Chen's blog, here: http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2004/05/27/143042.aspx#143493[^]) that explorer only remembers the last couple of hundred folder custumizations. So if you have customized a lot of folders, the oldest custumizations will be lost. The solution I'm using consists of turning of per folder customization and setting all folders view to details. Go to Tools menu > Folder Options > View TabPage > "Apply to all folders" button Also uncheck the option "Remember each folder's view settings" in the list on that same TabPage Hope this helps [Edited to add a link and some extra info]

My standard procedure since at least Win2K. My personal favorite is the "don't show me file extentions for files you know about". Absolutely brain-dead .

Wish I could help you. I keep setting the columns to be reasonable (size/type/date/attributes), yet some folders keep reverting back to something whacky and useless like author/title/rating. My Saved Games folder (never used) right now shows Name-Artists-Album-#-Genre-Rating :wtf: The usability of Explorer as a whole sure took a nosedive in Vista. :|

That's an XP feature, not a vista one. Mommy MS knows better than you what columns you really want in your details view. Noone should ever care about the date stamp on a music file.

Dear God man ... you need to be saved from this madness ... go get Total Commander[^] and be done with Explorer already. yes ... I know TC isn't all pretty like Vista's explorer, but when it comes to my tools, I'll take functionality over looks any day.

Even better... put an MP3 in a folder containing 100's of documents and it will display the lot as if they were music files.

well I may as well use FAR manager if were talking _alternative_ things. Id like Explorer to do things properly though.

I haven't used Vista yet and since my solution works on XP, I don't really have any other ideas. Maybe you can try on some of the blogs of people who have worked on Vista?
