New laptop needed
-
After about 10 years the HDD on my laptop has got bad sectors on it. Unfortunately the largest HDD it can take is 30GB. Now I want to buy a new laptop for a maximum price of 500 Pounds. Which is the best laptop to get?

That's quite a low budget...perhaps a HP DV2130 Media Centre Dual Core[^] if you can stump up the extra £52? (If not they have some really cheap Acer Apsire 3662[^]'s)

I think the important question here is... 500 pounds of what?

Heck, you might even win popularity contests. ;) I can almost see the reply, "What makes you think I give a rat's posterior?" :~

I refuse to change to suit somebody else's sense of humor. Everyone gets 100% outlaw programmer, 100% of the time. Everybody should expect nothing less. :)

You may want to try eBay. I bought my sister a brand new Dell laptop worth around £850 for £450+VAT from one of the dozens of asset realisation firms that trade on there. It came 2 months into a 3 year NBD + 1 year accidental damage warranty that was transfered to her over the phone. If you can wait a few weeks then April will be a good month for deals like that. Companies will be getting their new IT budgets and the direct manufacturers like Dell and HP give big discounts for ordering certain £,000's each year. It can work out better value to buy 100 new laptops and sell 10 on at below manufacturing cost than it is to buy only 90. There is an entire section of the IT industry dedicated to taking advantage of that. Failing that finding something suitable, if you don't mind having a visually damaged case then you can find some amazing deals in the factory outlet stores for scratched and dented -- but otherwise sold as new -- laptops. My friend bought a £1,400 laptop through the Dell outlet store for £1,000 because there was a slight scratch to the plastic top and some scratches on the raised Dell logo. After a few months of use you'll clock up a few scratches anyway!

It is price. I don't have the Pound sign on my laptop keyboard. I have decided instead to go for a custom-built desktop. All of today's laptops don't come with a serial port which I need to interact with external hardware and other gadgets that I am building and hope to build.
