That software exists. You have three completely independant PCs and move the cursor over the edge of the screen in order to switch to the next one. Once set up correctly, it is completely awesome. It is called Synergy[^]

Yup, I'm using it to use my same mouse and keyboard from my vista pc to also control my solaris server screen.

Wow. Thanks for the link. I didn't know I needed it, but I do! At work, I have a network with two WinXP PCs, a Solaris PC, a RedHat PC, and a Knoppix PC. I don't need to tell you how often I type on the wrong keyboard or move the wrong mouse!

An application that let me move my cursor from PC to PC regardless of operating system. I have 3 PCs on one of my desks right now trying to fix them all and i keep grabbing the wrong mouse or thinking that i have 3 monitors on the same machine. It would be awesome to be able to give focus to a particular desktop just by moving my cursor in its direction.

I think this is what you're looking for: Synergy[^] It runs on Linux, Windows and MacOS X. It allows you to use 1 keyboard and mouse for all connected computers and it also allows copy/paste of text between the machines.

Actually, I tried to use it at work (because buying a KVM-Switch is deemed "too expensive", but putting a monitor on every server is standard procedure). I just cannot get it to compile/run on either of the three VAXen. (I love those, btw. Nothing beats versioning built into the file system!), so I have to live with three "holes" in the monitor park ;) Synergy is a brilliant solution for Windows and Linux systems, and hopefully, will be for MacOS as well. I just love it :)

Another commercial option would be multiplicity[^] I'm planning to buy a home laptop Real-Soon-Now and will probably end up trying all this and the other two apps mentioned here (assuming demos/trial ware are available for the commercial ones)

Another program that does the job: Multiplicity[^] from Stardock[^] There are supposed to be benefits over synergy, but I'm not qualified to comment. I like the idea of the non-active monitors dimming a bit. It would either be really cool - or a total pain. Iain.

Check out pvponline.com. The cartoonist there mentioned such a max tool that spans from iMac to macBook.

Depends what you're doing. At higher resolutions VNC can take a significant percentage of the serving machines CPU time. I imagine a software KM switch would have much lower overhead if you're doing anything computationally intensive.
