Online dating

Have anyone here tried online dating sites yet? What is your opinion of it? What hints and tips can you give to a lonely programmer? I have only recently started doing it, but I think it is far more nerve wracking than going the traditional way. Face to face one can at least see what you said wasn't misunderstood. Regards Jan

Jan, I've been doing it for a while and in a way its good cause you can email and talk and weed out the ones your not compatible with and if you do connect with someone you can meet them and get the rest of the story. But I prefer the old fashion way to meet them face to face..either way its a gamble. I guess the best advice I can give is be careful and don't be in a hurry. Good luck, Mike

I met my wife via email, not via an internet dating site, but just by a random email at work, I feel we bonded quite well via email, as it was a cool way to get to know one another without the pressure, by the the time we went on our first date we knew we were going to make it work. So my advice to you is just be honest.
Kind Regards, Gary

A close friend of mine met his spouse through Orkut. They got married a few months ago. I know of a few others who've used Orkut for similar purposes.

Suprising to me... that name has gotta be the most unromantic sounding social site name I've ever heard. It just sounds stupid.. or am I missing something?

It's owned and managed by Google - so it doesn't need a good name. :)

Tips: 1) Drop expectations. In any effort do what you can, and take the rest as you can. Don't expect miracles, and don't expect to have a computer hand you Mrs. Wright... errr... Right. (sorry Roger) 2) Others will have expectations, sorry, it is a fact of life. Even if you drop yours, someone will be thoroughly ticked that the computer didn't hand them the right person right off the bat. 3) Never lie. If you like football, and hate baseball, don't make believe you can stomach the game just because the lady looks like Salma Hayek. 4) Don't expect to find Salma Hayek on the sites. :) 5) Weed out the ones on the other side who are lying, and looking for Antonio Banderas. In the end be yourself, don't make believe you are something you are not simply because you have a computer between you. Take it slow, enjoy the dates, and I wish you a lot of luck! By the way, my fiancée and I met on eHarmony about 2 years ago, marriage being scheduled now, probably in June/July. :)

I met my wife on Yahoo! Personals while I was in college. At the time I was just using it for free and my wife was a paying customer. She contacted me! :-D My advice is to take the whole thing slow, meet in well crowded areas, and do something like a dinner and a movie. If you don't like what you see, you only have to put up with it for about an hour before the movie starts and it doesn't make you look like a jerk for cutting the date off early. My wife and I emailed back and forth for a few weeks then we talked on the phone for about 2 months before we met each other in person. There has been a few bumps in the road since we met but this is in true in all relationships. We dated for three years before we became married.
