Game programming resources...

I've got a friend who wants to get into game programming. He asked if I knew of any good books or articles or whatnot. Anyway, since I have absolutely no interest in game programming, I thought I'd throw out the question to my favorite group of developers. :)
We are certainly uncertain at least I'm pretty sure I am...

rec.games.programming used to be a solid resource... haven't subscribed in years though, so no idea what it's like today. They're pretty dated, but i'd recommend any of the Michael Abrash books - the guy really knew how to write about that stuff. Also, the articles over on Gamasutra tend to be pretty good. The single best recommendation i have is to just trawl the net looking for source code for actual, shipped, commercial games. They won't teach you the best programming practices by any means, but they'll give you a lot of insight into the sorts of tricks and trade-offs that are necessary to get what you want. And of course, play games. Mod games. Look for the seams that tell how it all goes together. That's my advice as a former amateur game dev. Now let's hope Benjymous shows up and gives some real advice... ;)

It appears that everybody is under the impression that I approve of the documentation. You probably also blame Ken Burns for supporting slavery.

Along with gamedev that was already posted I recommend http://www.devmaster.net/[^] The biggest thing you can tell him is what you'd tell anyone who wants to write code, just get started and give it a try. [Edit] That's odd either this got attached to the wrong message or those 11:30pm status meetings are kicking my tail :)
My Blog A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.
