developers and Gym
-
Nothing could be further from the truth. Exercise, including resistance training (weight-lifting) stimulates and improves all parts of the body, especially the brain. Dumb people who spend all day in the gym get the reputation for being dumb because they are, and that's all they can excel at doing. The exercise didn't make them that way. That's just the hand they were dealt in life. Developers are a sedentary lot, on the whole, and such a lifestyle leads to a host of problems, including diminished mental capacity due to poor circulation, heart disease, low oxygenation, etc. A decent balance of regular exercise and mentally stimulating activity is a healthy choice, and one which will optimize your physical and mental abilities. A regular routine of weight training a couple times a week will not make you tired - it will give you more energy, rather than less. Mix it up with nights of cardio and aerobic exercises and you'll keep it interesting, as well as adding even more benefits. As for their peculiar personality quirks, exercise is probably not going to help developers much. But it won't hurt, either.;)

I do exercise 3 times a week and found that the "break" from programming actually gives me a chance to think while not at the computer. Much like when I'm stuck on some particular problem and jump into the shower - the answer usually hits me. I'm healthier, have climbed some of the local mountains, play raquetball, run, and code better than I ever have. FYI most of my exercise is cardio, but I also do some with *dumb*bells, pushups, etc. - still haven't cut out the caffine though!
