heya guys I have a problem i need solving. The story goes like this : I had not used my main (isp) email address for awhile. I decided to use it again - so i set up outlook express for it. Everything was fine.........until 4 days ago. what happened was this.......i started to get bombarded with emails containing virus's which i dealt with accordingly. My system got messed up but with the help of housecall antivirus my system is once again clean. BUT apparently someone is now using my email address. I know this because i get hundreds of returned mail delivery's per day. Now im sure u can appreciate its really annoying waiting for hundreds of emails to download - delete them and read my own emails. How can i stop this. This is a typical email : This message was created automatically by mail delivery software (Exim). A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: xdwandrea@hotmail.com SMTP error from remote mailer after RCPT TO:: host mx11.hotmail.com [64.4.49.199]: 550 Requested action not taken:user account inactive ------ This is a copy of the message, including all the headers. ------ ------ The body of the message is 122079 characters long; only the first ------ 102400 or so are included here. Return-path: Received: from host213-122-220-100.in-addr.btopenworld.com ([213.122.220.100] helo=Vljapxhhp) by tungsten.btinternet.com with smtp (Exim 3.22 #8) id 177VPQ-0000YX-00 for xdwandrea@hotmail.com; Tue, 14 May 2002 07:03:40 +0100 From: jpb1962 To: xdwandrea@hotmail.com Subject: Explorer for Macintosh MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary=Q065nXgUhG98 Message-Id: Date: Tue, 14 May 2002 07:03:40 +0100 --Q065nXgUhG98 Content-Type: text/html; Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable --Q065nXgUhG98 Content-Type: audio/x-wav; name=for.scr Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Content-ID: The rest of the email is garbage. To help - my email address is indeed shiver@btinternet.com. Who is the person responsible for all this spam???? please someone help! im getting depressed (ive gone past the laughing stage after the first day). thanks Phillip Harrison goblin@siegewars.net

This is not a spam mail. It was generated by your mail system to tell you that: your friend's email address (xdwandrea@hotmail.com) no longer exists! Maxwell Chen People say "No news is good news". Then, no bug is good bug!?

No, this is the result of spam mail. One of the tricks of the spammers is to use not the correct sender's address, but to use another one. And if a mail bounces, it goes to the false address. This is what he is seeing. Martin

Why are the mails bouncing back to your ISP? If they are addressed to you, they shouldn't bounce, and you can delete them with a filter rule. Martin

I was having the exact same problem a while back. Luckly things have calmed down for me. Was it the klez (I think that's what it was) virus? Martin Speiser wrote: delete them with a filter rule That's not all that easy. You can't very well just delete all mail that comes from someone who you didn't specify as OK... Sadly, I wish there was a way to stop getting all the stupid spam! It just builds up to a point that you dread getting the mail... :(

thanks. it appears that things have calmed down now. i only get 1 or 2 emails bouncing around still but its nearly gone. yes it was the worm klez which i think started it all off. i didnt even open an email to get it. i now have norton 2002 anti virus, etc now - which is a great program (id recommend it to anyone). Which brings me to those nasty ppl who deliberatly send virus's. Yes i know some ppl are innocent and dont know their system has a virus but the ppl who send them on purpose need a good kicking! Whoever they are - they dont gain anything from it and it certainly isnt "finding loopholes in programs - so doing the developers a favour" - i hate that comment and its used ALL the time. I admit 1 thing i did wrong - that is GET A VIRUS SCANNER. Since using norton 2002 i now have the piece of mind that my system is not totally vunerable but i would be naive to think my system is completly safe. Although norton is giving me some comfort. btw the worm klez infected 170 files in the end (all cleaned up now). Anyway happy surfing! (ps im not a salesman for norton - its just a great program) Phillip Harrison goblin@siegewars.net http://www.siegewars.net
