Best Linux?

The best thing to do would be to head over to Distrowatch which is the most comprehensive ranking site on the web for Linux distros. There are lots of pre-built VMWare images on the net for most of the Distro's. Ubuntu (or Kubuntu/XUbuntu) are very easy to use for those new to Linux. openSuse, Fedora and Mandriva are all very popular. Appart from running a VM you could try a live CD/DVD which run in memory and nearly all of the major Distros provide these now. The one final way you could run Ubuntu in particular is by heading over to the Wubi project at http://www.cutlersoftware.com/ubuntusetup/wubi/en-US/index.html[^]. They have come up with a way of installing Ubuntu like a windows application so you do not have to partition your hard drive or have to install it. It apparently shows up in add and remove programs.
Oh, uh, good question. Now technically speaking, uhh, let's say, put me down as a... 'Whatever'?

That might make sense for people who want to try Ubuntu, but keep windows as their main OS. I think a live DVD is better for them. Everything between a full installation on a real partition and a live DVD is some kind of compromise that makes Linux seem worse than it is.
