After buying a new CD from Wal-Mart I went and downloaded some free bonus songs that came with it. But after downloading it locked up MediaMonkey and WMP trying to play them because of some stupid DRM protection. I tried a few converters but all they did was crash too. So basically I can't even play the free songs I got. I hate this Digital Rights Management crud! X| Does anyone have any suggestions?

One has to presume that this is not what happens for most people. I agree tho. It's plain as day that I can download all the CDs I want, and they can never stop it, I mean, I am listening to a CD right now, if I plug into the headphone jack and capture the audio on a PC, what can be done to prevent that ? So, the 15 odd CDs I expect to get in the mail this week, were all bought because I WANT to support artists. Why fight me when I'm trying to do the right thing ?

Well I found this in Maximum PC: FairUse4WM. But since I have WMP11 installed, I'll have to see if my friend can decrypt the files since he's running WMP10. Wow, an entire hour spent trying to play my free music, that's the last time I go through Wal-Mart for music.

What could prevent you from playing your music on your computer is the requirement of special hardware and software that requires encrypted connections among all your media devices and the software to support it, kind of like with HD-DVD and BluRay.

No. What Christian is talking about is the "analog hole" - analog recordings of reproductions are explicitly protected by the courts. It is the one thing that can never (currently) be DRM'd. Plus, the special hardware requirements are bleeding-edge new, DRM encumbered hardware is just beginning to come out. And the vast majority of studios have said they won't implement it yet (obviously, so that people will all have DRM-encumbered hardware when they finally decide to turn it on - if they turned it on now, people would get so angry immediately that it would never take hold).

Recently an RIAA executive suggested renaming DRM to "Consumer Content Enablement" because he thinks they're simply losing the PR naming battle. So do you feel "enabled" yet?! Stupid crocks got their head so far up their bleeps.. What an age we live in, when we're treated like a criminal for legally buying things in stores like any common thief. Oh, wait..

So you are saying you don't currently need a monitor that supports the encrypted signal or a graphics card that has the HDMI output?

You meant it as an insult, however now you are promoting a file sharing site and its use for downloading music. Thats interesting. I would like an invite code though.

No, actually, I don't. You do if you run Vista [snicker] but I'm very happy with XP Pro, but that's beside the point. Also, Vista does this regardless of whether or not your media actually has any DRM! Bloody retarded.. At any rate, it still won't plug the analog hole.

Nope. Only applies if the media has the appropriate form of DRM and has the 'downgrade outputs' flag enabled. Which basically means HD digital cable, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. It does not apply to legacy (e.g. DVD) playback. Microsoft are not completely retarded. The condition the movie studios put on permitting software playback of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray was that this 'secure' path was included in the OS. If the flag is set (not currently used, apparently), non-HDCP digital connections are disabled outright, and analogue connections are downscaled to some rubbish resolution - 800x600 or something like that, I forget.
