Not in a modern capitalistic economy where the cost of not hiring the best and the brightest of any race can be severe. Any company hiring on the basis of race would quickly find its competition acquiring the best available candidtates and suffer consequencies far more extreme than any government could impose. All the black race in America ever needed was for the terrorism practiced against them to be treated as it would be for any one else. They didn't need to be led around by the hand like children for the rest of our national history. That attitude has done extreme harm to them as a group and has achieved nothing but the empowerment of leftist leaning politics in our natonal debates.

The government can impose very extreme consequences, as I am sure you are aware. The more fundamental point is that, while it is true that employer prejudice is harmful to profits if the employer is the only one who is prejudiced, in the presence of coworker and/or customer prejudice, an employer may make more money by discriminating. And coworker and customer prejudice might be expected to be common "in a society free to be openly racist".

I usually let threads die after they get so far down, but your response really bugs me. You are clearly trying to suppress political dissent. This has become far too common in our society and is a perfect example of the Marxist left's outright domination of the public debate by frameing false moral arguments. It is perfectly appropriate to question the hypocrisy inherent in the legal notion of 'hate crimes'. It is a political issue and I have the right to express my opinions on it without having you brand me with a scarlet 'R', you drug addict fascist pig.
