It never ceases to amaze me how gov't works  The latest item that has me scratching my head is this one: Congress votes to increase minimum wage House, Senate pass $2.10 increase as part of Iraq spending bill http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18847929/ I'm not complaining about the minimum wage hike in general. I'm astounded that it's part of a war funding bill. :wtf::wtf::wtf:

Makes perfect sense, Republicans wouldn't dare vote against a bill supporting the troops. But this is getting to be soapbox material.

You'd be amazedhorrified at the amount of crap that gets tacked onto unrelated bills this way. THe more popular/important the main bill is the more crap and the more noxious the sort of crap that ends up riding on it becomes. Politicians then have to choose between voting against a popular piece of legislation and being pilloried for it at the next election or ignoring all the other crap bundled with it. Back in the 90's congress passed a bill that would've given the president the ability to veto individual line items rather than having to yea/nay the bill as a whole. It was struck down as unconstitutional, and afaik noone cared enough to try and push an amendment through to allow it.

That's nothing. This is what's going on in IL: sb1007[^] An anti-gun legislation (a totally useless one too) is amended to child molestation bill. Awesome, now everyone who votes against it based on the stupid amendment is going to be labeled as child molester supporter. And the amendment is a stupid one, it limits handgun/rifle magazines to 10 rounds, the moron who introduced it argues that in the wake of VT shootings, limit on 10 round magazines will help reduce the number of potential victims. I can't even begin to describe how stupid that is. All it means is that would be shooters will switch from 9mm to .40 or even bigger caliber that does more damage, or *gasp* just buy hi-cap magazine in another state and bring it back. There was a shooting recently in Chicago where a teenager was killed, well guess what, there is a ban on handguns in Chicago, if that ban didn't stop the shooting, why do they think 10 round magazine limit will. It simply astounds me on so many levels that someone would use child molestation bill to push absolutely stupid useless law that suit their agenda. They are going to vote on it this week. I hope it fails.

Yeah, this is business and usual for the government. They have the idea that you need something sweet to make the bitter go down better. I personally do not believe that any bill should contain more than one issue. But, even at that it would not matter, so they would just agree behind the closed doors to vote for each others stuff as a compromise. Not much of a way around it. [rant on] As for the wage increase though, here in Oregon minimum wage is currently $7.50 per hour. One of the reason ours is higher than the national is that many years ago we enacted a rule that allows the minimum wage to increase automatically with inflation. So, the $7.50 per hour is the same as it was years ago when you account for inflation. I think that is still way too low in most areas of the USA for those that have no skill and have to live most of their life at that rate. A person should be able to exist (not a great living, but have a roof over their head - without living where you have to fear for your life daily, food and transportation) on just one full time job. Maybe even to support a normal family to that same level. I use to feel that we should let a person work for whatever they want to work for without regulation, but after seeing the business world for a few decades, I know they would always pay the absolute minimum and people would be forced to live at that level. So, I think the national minimum wage should be kicked up to $15 per hour! [rant off]
