Paying for recruiting trips?
-
I have read a latest Joel's article[^], and I must say I can't disagree more. Especially now, when there is a shortage of good developers in Europe. Is it a good sign if a company is interested in a developer and at the same time asks him/her to pay all flight and hotel expenses just to come to the interview? Definitely not. First of all it's now less and less reasons to have vis-a-vis interview in the same room, at least in the beginning. A company can have several conversations with a candidate on Skype. And then, if a candidate is so interesting that they will meet him personally, is it him or they who can more easily sposnor the trip without substantial economical losses? I personally find a request for a job candidate to pay for his long distance trip arragant, and such company would be in the bottom of my list to consider.

Having heard that it costs 20k - 30k to get a recruitment bureau that is willing to bring in new developers I say sponsoring the trip is the least they could do. It's far cheaper to do that than to find yet another candidate.
