Opera 9
-
I downloaded and installed Opera 9 and now I can say that IE is getting further and further towards the back of my mind. I already defaulted to FireFox over IE (for obvious reasons) but now theres another browser that has stepped in front of IE for 2nd place on the list. Will MSFT ever do anything to make IE compete with the likes of FireFox (hell and even Opera now).

I think not.

I think that, as developers, we miss the point on this one. However wonderful we feel that every other browser is the fact is that, for the vast majority of users, they get a box that has Explorer on it and that's it. They'd no more think of downloading and installing another broswer as you or I would suddenly decide, with no real experience or knowledge, to remove the engine from our Jaguar XJ6 and replace it with a Chevy (think it was a 350 small-block) engine and transmission. (Actually, have done that). Until pc manufacturers install FireFox and leave off Explorer most people will just use Explorer. They won't alter or customise it in anyway: they'll use it cos it's there, it's free and, for the most part, it works.

That's not technically possible, as far as I know.

Strange really as I have tried both Firefox and Opera and gone back to IE. It is all very subjective I know.

The IT guys in my company actually refused to install FF due to "Virus Attacks". I was left speechless.....:wtf: And Opera, I've been using it for years now, and except for few sites that do not render well, it's the best browser I've come across. I like FF, no doubt, but it's just a tad too heavy on the memory requirement, which might be a problem with about half a dozen instances of Visual Studio, SQL Server and other memory munching apps running in my workstation at any given time.

I'm doing css/web dev at work and despite using FF, Opera, Netscape, and Safari every day I still prefer IE

Me too. FF feels slow, and Opera wouldn't display too many web sites (including CP). I only miss "search links as you type" from IE7 - maybe I make an add-in some day.

That's why so many complain about microsoft's policy to integrate so many tools in its OS to kill the competition. An efficient tactic for most people.

Opera doesn't support integrated Windows authentication. That means it will never get a look in within most large corporates.
Does FF have a plugin to do it? The last time I had to use something with it (sharepoint X|) I had to enter my password everytime.

Firefox supports it natively. You're prompted to enter your password because by default, FF isn't configured to send your credentials to any sites automatically. You can change that[^].

Yes, but can you blame them for doing so if that's the only legal way they can hire programmers they want at the rate they can afford?

Well, when you are still #1 in usage, I do not think there is such a rush. IE 7 has taken a giant leap in standards complaince. They are not completely there, but it is far better than they have every been. I expect V8 to even push further to that point. Every browser has its quirks and Opera has had its fair share and then some, but I just wish everyone would update to the latest version of whichever browser they use. Tired of mangling code to make it work on old versions of IE such as V6 or even Opera. It is not that bad to right code which looks good on the latest versions but man, just one or two prior versions and it is trash! As for Opera though, no Silverlight yet... :(
