Pseudo Echo's version of Funky Town was much better than Lips Inc. D.

Im bored, I've got heaps to do at work today but its just not happening. The code I'm working on takes about 15 mins to run and test itself which makes it hard to get into a grove. I was reading an article in the paper about a band called Dinosaur Jr, they're one of my favorties so I thought I'd have a look for some of their clips on you tube. This reminded me of a cover they did of a song called Just Like Heaven by The Cure which I always thought was a great intepretation of the original. So my question is this - which bands have covered songs that you have liked more than the original? Here is Dinosaur Jr[^]

I'd say Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along The Watchtower" is better than Bob's.

Speaking of Bob, what do you think of his latest release? I heard the first track from it on the radio, and I was shocked and dismayed by how he sounded. On this one track, at least, he sounds like he recorded it during a bout of laryngitis.

I've not heard his new album, I inherited my love of Bob from my father who loved his older acustic / harmonica stuff rather than the new electric guitar stuff. I might pick up a copy before we go and see him play. I saw him play about 7 years ago and was a bit disapointed with what he played. I guess there are only so mnay times he can perform Like a Rolling Stone etc without getting bored

I totally agree. That probably goes for most performers. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a national treasure, a musical Mark Twain.

:) Its funny, I have a few remastered CD's of his, a few "Best Of" cd's but what I listen to most is an old tape dad put together in the 70's. its complete with the stratches from the LP's, has been dubbed about a dozen times and has blank bits and bits of radio where someone has accidently hit the record button on the tape player a few times I'd put Neil Young in the same category, I saw him play a few years ago and it was an amazing show. It was the tour for the Greendale album which told the story of a family somewhere in "small town usa". For each song the curtain would go down, a set quickly arainged and actors would act out the songs as he sung them. After he'd played the whole album end to end, they cleared the stage and he came out with his mouth organ and did an hour or so of the classics. Couldnt have asked for more

Metallica's covers of Diamond Head songs are (IMVHO) generally better than the Diamond Head originals - they rock more :-) That could, of course, have something with the fact that I heard the covers before the originals. Similarly, Voivod's[^] covers of Pink Floyd tracks (Astronomy Domine on their album Nothingface, The Nile Song on The Outer Limits) always added something to the original, rather than being a slavish rehash of the original. Their cover of the Batman theme (from the 60s/70s camp-fest) is less successful ;P.

I like Rod Stewart's "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" better than the original version, played by CCR.

I just love it when rock bands do cover of plain stupid songs, like the Arctic Monkeys did of the Girls Aloud's "Love Machine"[^]. The lyrics are a total bollocks but I guess that's the reason they picked this tune. I had a few others that I liked but can't remember them right now.

Cheers, Mircea Many people spend their life going to sleep when they’re not sleepy and waking up while they still are.

5, although frankly a cat being spayed without anaesthetic would be better than Bob's.

Johnny Cash singing "Hurt". A good NIN song, but much better with Johnny's old voice. And Marylin Manson's "Sweet dreams". Such a boring song in the original. Although I'm not really fond of MM, I think his version's better.

I was just going to post that as well. Manson does very very good remixes. These also turned out really well: Another Brick In The Wall Tainted Love Personal Jesus

Really? He has been sounding like that for about 10 years now. If anything he sounds slightly better than he does some of the songs in his last album. But having said that, the album itself wasn't as interesting as his last one (Love and Theft).

Guns 'n Roses version of 'Live and Let Die' ,possibly the only Beatles track to be covered better than the original. Guns 'n Roses versions of Bob's 'Knockin on Heaven's Door', poor old Bob just keeps getting covered :) Dan Reed's cover of 'Rainbow Child' by Grateful Dead I think. Enya's version of 'How can I keep from singing' I have no idea if there's a recorded original or who by just that it wasn't hers originally. That lot should be enough to drive anyone wild

Nothing is exactly what it seems but everything with seems can be unpicked.
