Johnny Cash singing "Hurt". A good NIN song, but much better with Johnny's old voice. And Marylin Manson's "Sweet dreams". Such a boring song in the original. Although I'm not really fond of MM, I think his version's better.

Yeah, I never understood how good of a songwriter Trent was until I heard Johnny Cash sing Hurt.

Im bored, I've got heaps to do at work today but its just not happening. The code I'm working on takes about 15 mins to run and test itself which makes it hard to get into a grove. I was reading an article in the paper about a band called Dinosaur Jr, they're one of my favorties so I thought I'd have a look for some of their clips on you tube. This reminded me of a cover they did of a song called Just Like Heaven by The Cure which I always thought was a great intepretation of the original. So my question is this - which bands have covered songs that you have liked more than the original? Here is Dinosaur Jr[^]

I like the Social Distortion cover of "Ring of Fire", it's not better just different. I still love the Johnny Cash version. There are a few SxDx covers of Rolling Stones songs like "Under my thumb" and "Backstreet Girl" that I like better. The poster children cover of "Divide and Conquer" by Husker Du is better then the original

I was just going to post that as well. Manson does very very good remixes. These also turned out really well: Another Brick In The Wall Tainted Love Personal Jesus

Don't like "Tainted Love" and "Personal Jesus", although they are fare better than the originals.

I liked NIN before. The new thing's crap, but I liked the old stuff in my salad days.

Lazlo Bane just released an album of nothing but covers. I haven't heard all of them yet though. One of my favorites is Tom Jones and the lead singer of the Cardigans remake of "Burning Down the House"

Dino Jr's Show Me The Way is also fantastic. i like Gillian Welch's version of Radiohead's Black Star better Cowboy Junkies' Sweet Jane and I'm So Lonesome I Could Die also Cowboy Junkies' version of Dino Jr's Post Bauhaus' Telegram Sam Talking Heads' Take Me To The River (my vote for best cover, ever) Pixies' Head On Guns n Roses' Mama Kin Superchunk's It's So Hard To Fall In Love (written by Lou Barlow, also of Dino Jr) John Coltrane's My Favorite Things - though, saying something's a "cover" in jazz is silly - it's all covers.

I much prefer Metallica's version of Bob Seger's "Turn the Page."

That is one of the worst covers of all time. The original had a "feeling" or "vibe" to it, that the cover just didn't have.

I'd say Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along The Watchtower" is better than Bob's.

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow - Still I'm Sad (more of a concept than a true cover since it was an instrumental) Dokken - One (3 dog night) Shinedown - Simple man acoustic (Lynyrd Skynyrd) incredible vocals on that one.

Elton John's versions of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" and "Pinball Wizard" Wall Of Voodoo's version of "Ring Of Fire". The original is good too, but I don't crank it.

Johnny Cash singing "Hurt". A good NIN song, but much better with Johnny's old voice. And Marylin Manson's "Sweet dreams". Such a boring song in the original. Although I'm not really fond of MM, I think his version's better.

Elton John's versions of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" and "Pinball Wizard" Wall Of Voodoo's version of "Ring Of Fire". The original is good too, but I don't crank it.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of Little Wing, fantastic instrumental. Fun Lovin Criminals cover of Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne, I love the original too, but the Fun Lovin Criminals one is a great lounge version!
