Adding IrDA to my PC
-
Has anybody added an IrDA module to a motherboard? My Gigabyte GA-7ZM has the connection for it, and the module only costs $32. Thats good because I am planing to use it to replace my $70 Nokia Data Cable which was broken. Solves the problem, is cheaper, and more elitist :) My question is, has anybody done this? Is there sufficient driver support? And were there any troubles in getting the computer to "see" the phone, or vice versa. I'm having trouble working out where to actually put the IrDA "eye" thing... Those on-board IrDA connections have some downsides: - you'll lose one serial port - no high-speed IrDA There are USB IrDA adapters around, which support high-speed (4MBit) IrDA connections. Even though you won't need a high-speed connection to use a phone, I'd choose that way, since it's not dependend on your specific mainboard. Regarding driver support: Depends on the OS used. Elderly OS versions have worse to none support. BTW: $32 sounds like a rip-off for an infrared transmitter with some wires attached to it, but prices here (in europe) can't be compared to prices in the US (since you don't mention _what_ kind of $, you're likely from the US; did you know that canadians and australians also name their currency 'dollar'?).

AUD$32 == roughly US$15 Thanks for the info :D -- David Wengier Sonork ID: 100.14177 - Ch00k
