Minimum version of Vista for programming
-
I'm looking to buy a new laptop. Since all laptops come preloaded with Vista is there a minimum level that I need to do programming development? for example will visual studio 6 run on vista home? If I'm trying to do programming to I need to upgrade the level of vista? I'm an out of work software engineer and trying to keep my skills, and maybe learn new programming. What are my bare bones requirements? Thanks in advance. Very funny Scotty, now beam down my clothes.

Vista Home Basic is pretty limited - no Aero for starters - but AFAIK you can still use it for development.

It depends how much money you want to spend on your development environment.. I advise that you dont worry about what edition of Vista you get, but you get a strong, fast, solid laptop which will serve as a good development environment.. Don't worry too much about the Edition of Vista.. The new aero theme in the Vista Premium package consumes something like 25% more battery than XP (you'll have to check that figure) on a laptop anyway. Hope this helps! --PerspX

I use Home Premium myself. Home Basic should also work -- I haven't heard of any problems using Visual Studio it. Make sure the laptop has plenty of hard drive space and a couple gigs of ram if you're going to run development in Vista, especially if you're planning to use VS 2005 or Orcas. Flynn
