Well I commend you for your sensible comments and for avoiding gratuitous Catholic bashing. Some people like to emphasize Christian fanaticism while simultaneously minimizing the fanaticism coming from radical Islam. But you did not, so congrats.

I remember reading in Matt Ridley's excellent book 'Genome' that the last pope had also made a very similar statement.. That evolution is true, except that God 'introduced' something divine in humans at some point.

You forget that you personally have had no direct contact with your "Maker". You have simply heard his words through the mouth and pen of other humans. These words were no doubt interpreted multiple times since the first recording and what you are taught today is what man has interpreted to be the Christian Faith. As a Rabbi once preached at a B'nai Mitzvah I attended, the Torah (or Bible old testament) contains stories from god. These stories are guidlines for which should live our lives. They are to be interpreted by humans, as they were in the past, to try find their true meaning. My basic approach to this is: Don't follow any man spiritually, don't do anything that will get you in shit if god is real. Now if you really want to we can take this discussion up at another location.
