Well, call me an asshole but I don't see anything wrong with the article. Actually, she was right on with most of it. I would like to ask Minosknight who do work for, what is your position, and how many employees do you have in your company? I would also like to ask, exactly what in this article offended you so much? -- Steve

I've never read any of her articles before but I agree that it's poorly written and some of the "tips" are crap. Theres no coherency to it, it doesn't get to any point and it seems like something someone just "phoned in" without really working up a good article that means anything. I don't know about career suicide though, I can't see that in it really.

:| I work in a hedge fund, I oversee a group of programmers that came straight out of college. We have about 30 employees all-in-all. I'm not offended by any of it, merely shocked at such shoddy advice. If I ever saw someone with headphones on, they would be promptly ordered to go home. Take vacation days, don't ask for them!? Ditch exit interviews!? Ignore colleagues without attempting to resolve issues!? What do you think is spot-on about this article!? And what company do you work for? and are they accepting applications?

Maybe not career, but job suicide...if I told my boss I was taking a vacation and merely sent him an e-mail and left. I doubt I would have my job waiting for me when I returned...

I can only really disagree with one point here: "When you need to leave work for a few hours or a few days, you don't need to ask for permission" - Unless you have a very insular, private job, that's downright rude for any age.

I think she's writing for a different world that the one we IT workers typically inhabit. I disagree with a lot of what she says, but I don't think it's rank stupidity, it's just a different viewpoint. I won't work on the weekends, and I don't page people or call them to make them think I am. I also think that Myspace and Facebook are social networking sites, and completely inappropriate for maintaining work relationships. However... if you have a Myspace page, blog or web site, I agree that you shouldn't try to hide who you are, and you should not post anything that could get you fired. I've seen people do this... post a bunch of stuff that borders on the illegal, and then try to hide their identity. There is no reason for that. If you're into weird sex or something like that... DON'T put it on your Myspace page in the first place! Keep that where it belongs, in your private communications. If you have normal hobbies that aren't politically inflammatory, then you should be open about it so that if they care, people can find that information and tell a little about what kind of person you are. I post some pretty inflammatory stuff on my blog and web site, but I don't try to hide who I am, and I don't post anything that I could legally be fired for. Therefore, I don't have to hide my identity... but I'm not going to invite my boss to be my friend on Myspace. He's not my friend, he's my boss. http://jazzyflight.blogspot.com/[^] - Jazzy's Flight Deck http://www.myspace.com/jasmine1971[^] - Myspace http://smoothjazzy.blogspot.com/[^] - My personal blog http://www.smoothjazzy.com/ [^] - My personal web site There is some politically inflammatory stuff there, but I don't engage in any criminal activity, don't post any porn or anything, don't have photos of my guns or something... I'm pushing the limit, but I'm not afraid of my boss reading any of that stuff. Not that he would care, but you know...

Well at least in here...there is a lot of communication going on. So maybe that is specific to my place of work, but it still doesn't seem like a good idea.

I wear headphones ~70% of the day -- if you told me I couldn't wear my headphones my moral would plummet.

We find particularly IM helps productivity and concentration, because if you call out to or walk up to someone, they are immediately distracted. If you MSN them, they have time to finish that concentration critical task before responding. We sometimes even use it without headphones.
