Error message OTD

From Excel:
A document with the name 'foobar.xls' is already open. You cannot open two documents with the same name, even if the documents are in different folders. To open the second document, either close the document that's currently open, or rename one of the documents.

This is in the current version of Excel? I could have sort of understood that back in Win3.1, but since then? WTF??!?!

That's not the real filename ;P I substituted a fake name because the real name is work-related and I didn't want to reveal it.

Excel 2007 has the same problem. But I just ignore and continue to gaze with fascination at how good the ribbon looks.

Excel is sort of a hybrid MDI app so it doesn't open more than one instance of itself by default even if it looks like it did. That's why hitting the X in the corner will close all documents, not just that one. Plus, you can't have two spreadsheets up in front of you at the same time, which drives me bonkers. You can get around that and the 2 documents with the exact same name silliness by going the long way through the start menu to open another empty Excel instance (it will complain that PERSONAL.XLS or some such is locked, just ignore it won't cause any problems).
I hate that the 'x' closes ALL open windows by closing the whole application. If I have two windows, each with an 'x' in the corner, and I click the 'x' I expect it to just close that window. Like ALL OTHER PROGRAMS AND WINDOWS. My god, I can't imagine trying to explain that to the students at the university where I used to do general support. Closing documents is frightening enough to some people without variable behaviour. And then - if they had modified the document they WEREN'T trying to close, it would pop up a "Do you want to save?" dialog, and the student would think "what, I didn't make changes to this document what is it talking about" (or may actually want to discard changes in the current doc) and click "no" and then it will not save changes in the second window (which they didn't even realise they were closing) and the changes will be lost - ... I think I'm going to have nightmares about trying to explain that to computer illiterates now. :omg:

I hate the ribbon as well as the other Excel "features" discussed in this thread. Why is everything in such a random place now? Why do the menus keep changing? Where did that thing I used last time go? I don't know, I think I am getting old (24). I can't deal with the constantly changing technology anymore. I remember the good old days when Windows '95 came out - that thing was fantastic. (so now it makes me want to throw up. At the time I was amazed.)

I know. Excel has had this issue forever. WTF were the developers thinking when they did that. It was only in this Office app and not the others. Truly :wtf:.
